In popular mythology, Santa Cristina was martyred and died tragically in the well, which had been built by her father to punish her for her Christian faith. According to the myth, the Saint went head first down the stairs of the well, before being imprisoned there. Another myth tells that, as Santa Cristina descended the stairs, she touched the well with her veils and created the beading in the walls of the monument. Yet another sees the Saint perishing inside the nuraghe during a war between the residential centres of Paulilàtino and Bonàrcado.
